(N.Morgan) The videos below are harrowing footage of commercial flights on a hazardous approach to the runaway, blown around by the heavy crosswinds at what has been dubbed “Europe’s scariest airport” on the Portuguese island of Madeira, a popular holiday spot.
The footage was filmed captured pilots struggling to land passenger jets in 49mph (78.8 kph) crosswinds.
As a result of safety concerns, the airport’s original runaway has been extended twice: in 1977 after a major plane crash claimed the lives of 131 people, and again in 2000. The modifications saw the runway’s length increase from 1,600m (5,249ft) to 2,781m (9,124ft)
Madeira Airport formerly known as Santa Catarina Airport and informally known as Funchal Airport, is an international airport in the civil parish of Santa Catarina, municipality of Santa Cruz, in the Portuguese archipelago of Madeira.
