A coated tongue can indicate any number of health conditions whose symptoms appear in the mouth. Thrush, a form of Candida is a common cause for a coated tongue. And upset stomach, autoimmune diseases or an unhealthy life style such as smoking cigarettes or heavy alcohol consumption may be the cause of your tongue discoloration. Halitosis or badbreath may also be the result of a coated tongue. A variety of herbal and other natural treatments are useful to clean your tongue, prevent additional problems and sweeten your breath.
Lifestyle Changes
Stop smoking cigarettes and using other tobacco products that are known to coat and discolor the tongue and create bad breath. Reduce alcohol consumption to help alleviate a coated tongue. Beer and sweet alcoholic beverages in particular can aggravate thrush making it more difficult to prevent a coated tongue and bad breath.
Beware of Dairy foods
Most dairy foods create mucus in the body which can also appear on the tongue leaving a sticky white coating on the surface. In addition, the mucus residue in your mouth causes bad breath that can linger for hours. Avoid milk, cheese and other dairy products unless they are fermented, such as yogurt or kefir. Fermented foods have live enzymes that digest mucus residue on the tongue as well as throughout the digestive tract.
Herbs to Prevent a Coated Tongue
Rinse your mouth with neem tea. Neem is an herb from India also called Adirachta indica, purported to be an effective substance for treating and clearing a coated tongue, explains Depak Chopra. Neem acts as a blood purifier. It can be purchased online or in Indian and Middle Eastern specialty stores. Combine one tablespoon of dried neem leaves with one cup of water and boil to reduce the mixture to about half a cup and cool. Gargle with the mixture. Do not sweeten this rinse if using to clean the tongue. Chopra also suggests rinsing the mouth with aloe vera juice. Place 1 tablespoon of aloe vera juice in your mouth and gargle with it. Spit it out. Take another tablespoonful and swish again and then swallow the second spoonful. Repeat daily for a two week period to clear toxins from the mouth and gums. Aloe vera is very helpful in preventing bad breath.
