Emerging Hollywood superstar Anthony Mackie risked his reputation in the notoriously left-leaning city by praising outspoken Republican GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump in a recent interview.

He told BET’s Smriti Mundhra this week that he would “100 percent want to run Trump’s campaign,” predicting that a victory for the brash billionaire would conclude with the “best party ever.”

Mackie, known for his work in The Avengers, had several reasons for backing the unconventional White House hopeful. He confirmed that his position is the result of “drinking the Kool-Aid” regarding Trump’s candidacy.

“When you look at Trump,” he said, “he’s an easy sell because you can sell him as the guy who worked his way up from nothing.”

Among his other attractive qualities, Mackie cited the fact that his personal wealth could diminish the influence of outside money from special interest groups. While Trump’s wide base of supporters generally embraced the actor’s endorsement, numerous critics wondered how he could back such a candidate.

So Anthony Mackie is endorsing a racist idiot and doesn’t know the basic details of Trump’s background. Cool cool.

As it turns out, Mackie might have the last laugh. He has since followed up with a tweet declaring the entire ordeal had been his attempt at sarcasm.

Sorry Donald, that wasn’t an endorsement. Just a bad attempt at a joke, I guess? — Anthony Mackie (@AnthonyMackie) October 19, 2015
