A Washington state man who purchased a toy plane for his 3-year-old nephew was surprised to find it did not make flying noises, as advertised, but rather something religious in nature.

“My nephew opened a present. We put the batteries in and didn’t get what we expected,” Bjorn Thorpe told KING-TV. “The plane is supposed to make flying noises and plane noises.”

Instead, what they heard were verses from an Islamic prayer. 

“Sounds like an Arabic chanting, which is pretty unusual,” Thorpe said. ”We were kind of confused on how this would happen. It’s just kind of not the right situation to have that on a children’s toy.”

Thorpe’s plane was apparently not the only one that suffered from this bizarre flaw. Multiple people commented on Amazon, where Thorpe purchased the toy, of having the same problem. Other buyers described the Arabic chanting as “creepy,” “disturbing,” “un-American,” “annoying,” and “scary.”

Nadeem Israr, president of the Islamic Society of Whatcom County, Wash., told KING-TV, the chanting is in actuality “a prayer you’re supposed to say when you’re performing Hajj” — the pilgrimage to Mecca. “That’s very wrong. It’s very, very wrong,” Israr said of the fact that the recording was on the toy plane.

“The toy company, WolVol, blames its manufacturer, saying the manufacturer must have mistakenly shipped them a bad batch of toys. It pointed to its nearly 4-star rating on Amazon…” according to KING-TV.

All Thorpe knows is that he expects a full refund from Amazon, so he can buy his nephew another plane.
