Our Christian commitment rightly understood (assuming the reader is a Christian) comes first. As such, the Bible teaches us that we remain today a stranger and a pilgrim—we have here no continuing city (a place to feel ‘at home’, Hebrews 13:14) —but we seek such a safe haven—for our citizenship is in heaven from whence comes our salvation.
From the pen of Paul, the Apostle to the Gentiles—especially to one, most accomplished of intellect, Thomas Jefferson, and to all who carelessly embrace our Founding Fathers as stalwart purveyors of the Christian faith, a warning:
Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to naught:
But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory:
Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. (I Corinthians 2:6-8)

Hal Lindsey shares a personal anecdote upon visiting a seaside prison in Rome (the Mamertine Prison, Carcere Mamertino). Lindsey witnessed a plaque that commemorated the circumstances surrounding the death of Paul the Apostle there. When Paul was beheaded, he was put to death in the company of many from the Pretorian Guard, Caesar’s personal bodyguards. We do not mean that they witnessed his death. We mean that they died alongside him. They were Romans as few citizens of Rome could claim. And yet, no doubt after one to two years of his preaching and teaching, they committed their lives to Christ and elected to die alongside Paul.
May their identification with Paul’s vision of that heavenly city (Hebrews 11:10),[31] be our own—for we should not dream of the New Atlantis as envisioned by Francis Bacon and the secret societies which flourished among our Founding Fathers. It is appropriate to aspire to governance that institutes the separation of Church and State, and which protects the free pursuit of religion by the governed. Nevertheless, striving for utopian government is an ill-conceived objective which denies the fallen state of humanity. Believers in the God of revelation and authority must come to terms with what Paul undoubtedly taught the Praetorian guards, his disciples and fellow martyrs. In the words of the apostle John: “We know that we are of God, and that the whole world lies in the power of the evil one” (I John 5:19, NASV).
