Friday is the day that GOP front-runner Donald Trump is to come under attack by the internet hacking group Anonymous.
The group declared “total war” on the candidate in a March 15 YouTube video, dubbed #OpTrump (see below). The goal of the operation is to “dismantle his campaign and sabotage his brand.”
“Your inconsistent and hateful campaign has not only shocked the United States of America, you have shocked the entire planet with your appalling actions and ideas. You say what your audience wants to hear but in reality you don’t stand for anything except for your personal greed and power,” said an Anonymous member in the video.
The group also targeted Trump in December following his announcement proposing a temporary ban on all Muslims entered the United States.
On March 17, a video surfaced from Anonymous called #OpWhiteRose, which features links to Trump’s personal information including his Social Security number, contact information of his family members, and certain members of his campaign.
That video goes after Trump for promoting “an agenda of fascism, xenophobia as well the religious persecution of Muslims through totalitarian policies.”
Fox Business reports that the “Secret Service confirmed that it is investigating Anonymous’ threats with the assistance of the FBI. A Trump campaign official said they are looking into arresting those responsible.”
“Anonymous is one of the more secretive and least-understood hacking collectives on the Internet. It’s unknown how many members it has and there is believed to be no clear hierarchy. Instead, it’s a collection of individuals with hacking skills that rally around certain operations,” according to Fortune. “Anonymous members are allowed to choose the operations they’d like to participate in, and sit out of those they don’t care about.”
Former Anonymous member Deric Lostutter, aka “KYAnonymous” told Fox Business, “Trump is poison to the country, he wants to impose totalitarianism under his rule and that is not what democracy is about,” Lostutter said, adding, “Anonymous wants justice, transparency and power to the people they represent – people as a whole. Donald Trump does not represent that.”
The Guardian reports that the #OpTrump has actually created a schism within the Anonymous world, with several opposing the attack as being too political in nature. “There has been large amounts of opposition to this operation as many think that OpTrump aims to censor Donald Trump’s free speech,” a person claiming to be involved with Anonymous wrote on anonymous message board site Ghostbin. The user added, however, that the argument isn’t true, adding that Anonymous “does not stand for a specific political ideology.”
