Whoopi Goldberg could only see racism on Thursday when she grilled Ben Carson about his support of Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump.
Carson, however, tried to show Goldberg and the other women of The View something bigger. “It’s about America. We have to save this nation,” he said.
Throughout the show, Goldberg question Carson about his alignment with some she believes is racist, and anti-women.
“This guy … he’s a racist and he’s not good for the country,” Goldberg said during the show, demanding how Carson could support a candidate who “bashed women” and “made countless racist remarks.”
“You’re Ben Carson! You’re so much better than this,” she said.
Carson’s argued they had a difference in the depth of their vision.
“I’m thinking about the big picture,” Carson said.
“Could I focus only on racial issues? Absolutely. Could I focus on only women’s issues? Absolutely. I could look at any one little thing,” he said. “But right now the nature of our country is at stake. We are on a precipice and we are determining what kind of nation we are going to be. A nation of, for and by the people, or a nation of the government.”
“America is a nation in need and that of a nation in need of what only Trump can give it,” he said.
Goldberg asked Carson to explain his endorsement.
“I was going to remain neutral, but then I realized that, you know, the political establishment was aligning to protect their turf. They don’t like the idea of people who are not beholden to them and who cannot be controlled coming into Washington, D.C. And that was one of the reasons they didn’t like me very much, but I was easier to get rid of than Donald Trump.”
Goldberg continued to press Carson, asking how he could support Trump despite Trump’s campaign behavior, including his recent fight with Heidi Cruz, wife of rival Sen. Ted Cruz.
“I do not condone any of that. I don’t condone it from anybody,” he said.
He again tried to show that the election was about more than campaign style.
“The reason, again, that I’m endorsing him, is because I recognize that we are heading down the exact same path that we have been on all along,” he said.
Trump seemed irate over The View’s grilling of Carson and sent out a three-tweet burst about the show.
.@TheView T.V. show, which is failing so badly that it will soon be taken off thr air, is constantly asking me to go on. I TELL THEM “NO”
