One Moroccan woman wasn’t going to just stand by and let a male passerby sexually harass her, punching the man so hard that he was unconscious for two hours.
A video, uploaded to the internet by a store owner, shows a middle-aged woman as she knelt to kiss a little boy on a motorcycle in front of store in Inezgane, south of Agadir. A man, who was passing by the woman at the time, can be seen squeezing her buttocks. The woman reacted by spinning on her heels and punching him in the face.
The blow sent the man stumbling across the sidewalk where he crashed into a shop owner’s table of clothes before hitting his head on the pavement. Reports are the man sustained a serious head injury from the fall. The woman left him lying there while she explained to others passing by why she punched him. It is unknown if any charges were filed against either party.
These types of incidents are not uncommon in Morocco. Another incident happened in Inezgane last summer. In that case, street merchants harassed two young female hairdressers as they walked through a market.
In a surprise move, police sided with the street merchants because officers said their attire was ‘inappropriate.” The two women were arrested for “violating public decency.” The case sparked national controversy and an online petition calling for their release and the arrest of the men. The women were acquitted in trial that was held in July. There are no reports of the men ever facing charges.
