The government of Nepal has declared a state of emergency after a massive earthquake and hundreds of massive after shocks continue to hit the country.  Thousands of people are missing and have been killed.  Tremors were felt across the region, with thousands killed and many more injured in the neighboring countries of India, Bangladesh, and Tibet.

The powerful earthquakes shook Nepal on Saturday near its capital, Katmandu flattening sections of the city’s historic center and trapping dozens of sightseers in a 200-foot watchtower that came crashing down into a pile of bricks.

Emergency workers and army and police personnel, with the help of residents and bystanders, continued to work tirelessly early Saturday afternoon to clear the rubble from these sites and to rescue any survivors from under the debris, although most of the bodies that are being pulled out are lifeless.

As night falls in the country, thousands of people are staying outdoors and have found refuge in Kathmandu’s open spaces, in fear that subsequent aftershocks may cause further damage.

The quake also set off avalanches on Mount Everest at the peak of the climbing season.

A magnitude 6.6 aftershock hit the region about an hour later, and smaller aftershocks continued to ripple through the region for hours.
